The symbolism associated with the quince includes love, romance, fertility and abundance. The fruit is often given to newlyweds to wish them prosperity and in some countries a quince tree is planted to mark the birth of a child.
In its hard, raw state the quince emits an intense aroma but is almost impossible to eat as it is so sour. With time and slow cooking, its sweet flavour is released which reflects its association with patience and temperance.
It predates the modern apple and is sometimes considered to be the original forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.
